I first met Mack Little through the Houston Writer’s Guild. I ended up joining her writing group as she worked on the second installment of her Zenobia Grant series and I worked on SPARK. Since then, she has finished Book 1 of Daughter of Hades Series, and I was privileged enough to be asked to read an advance copy of that book. It’s launching today. It’s not SciFi in any way, so there won’t be a Feral rating but here’s the review:
Mack Little has a way with (and has her way with) the English language. The prose is brilliant and the word choice is perfect.
There’s not as much supernatural in Daughter of Hades as I have come to expect from Little, but that’s okay. She takes an absolutely unblushing look at the slave trade, slave culture, and what it really meant to be a pirate in the Caribbean in the mid-1600s. It’s not always pleasant.
What Little does best in Daughter of Hades is to tease out the love and humanity that survived and thrived in the worst of circumstances.
Little has done an impressive amount of research and takes us deeply into what she learned. Don’t expect it to be pleasant. Slavery isn’t and wasn’t pleasant. She researched her topics and only presents what she found documented.
Note: This is an adult book. There is sex aplenty with both cis and LBGTQ relationships.
