Moving pieces
It’s a busy time for me. I’m doing revisions to Fire, blogging, working, and “building my platform.”
That’s a phrase that didn’t exist twenty years ago unless you were talking about something to stand on. Now, publishers and agents are interested in it almost before they care about your work. If you’ve got 25,000+ followers on one of the major socials, you’re going to get noticed and bubble up to the top of their list. Hmm…maybe your social media platform is something to stand on – metaphorically.
Less than a month ago, my publisher, Inklings Publishing, called me and said, “Hey, we’re hiring a publicist for some of our authors. Are you willing to share the cost?”
Well, book sales are slow, and the investment was affordable. I figured I’d give it a shot.
Two weeks in, Mickey Mikkelson, of Creative Edge Publicity has set me up for:
- Five podcasts
- Two interviews
- One guest blog
- One magazine article
- Two professional reviews
- Two livestream interviews
- One radio program
That’s one per calendar day that he’s been representing me. I’ve got two podcasts (one video, one audio only) I’m doing this week.
The first is Shooting it Raw (https://www.shooting-it-raw.com)
The second, Friday, is The Douglas Coleman Show (http://www.douglascolemanmusic.com/dcs/)
No idea when they’ll air. I’ll post it when they do.
The third event for this week is a guest blog for Factually Fictional. They’re interested in the research writers do for their work and how it factors into a fictional story. I did this one on solar power and may do one in the future on augmented reality. The Factually Fictional piece will go live on the 21st and I’ll link to it here. I may also repost it here in an expanded form.
Before working with Mickey, I’d been on two podcasts – both arranged by Inklings. I’m very glad that we’ve signed with a pro!
