SPARK is a near-future science fiction novel that appeals to gamers and fans of Ready Player One and Ender’s Game.
The main male character, Will “Wonderboy” Kwan, entered the foster care system at age 13, and bounced from foster families to group homes and back. He flees his foster parents at age 16 after a grievous misunderstanding and heads to the last place he remembers being happy, Solar Prime Augmented Reality Park. SPARK is a Disney-scale theme park for gamers that uses Augmented Reality to immerse players into the quests.
The female lead, ShaChri “Feral Daughter” Patel, was orphaned at 14 when terrorists attacked a shopping mall on Black Friday, killing her parents. At fifteen, she’s had enough of living with her aunt, uncles, and cousins. She’s a hard-core gamer and wants to do it for a living. She heads out to SPARK to follow her dream.
Will and ShaChri have a disastrous first meeting but eventually romance develops. They butt heads and hold hands. Together, the two come to realize that there are many layers to SPARK, and that not all quests are open to the public.
SPARK takes advantage of two major technologies that they have developed: sentient Artificial Intelligence, and high-efficiency solar power. These inventions have put SPARK in the crosshairs of competing political and economic interests. When these factions turn violent, Will and ShaChri are forced to fight for their own survival and that of SPARK itself.
